Acid Reflux Pillow
The Acid Reflux Pillow
This helpful device is without a doubt one of the best natural no more heartburn remedies for acid reflux.
These types of pillows are being highly recommended by many doctors to alleviate the problems for GERD patients.
Even though the pillows are best known for its uses against acid reflux burning and other symptoms, they also seem to work very well for people with general problems in the stomach and digestive system, people with snoring problems, sleep apnea (a sleep disorder) or congestive heart failure (a condition where the heart is having problems pumping enough blood to the body’s organs).
What is acid reflux?
GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) as it is commonly referred to, is a potentially serious condition where the liquid stomach backs up (refluxes) into the esophagus/oesophagus (at times also called gullet, from the Latin word gula: throat).
The liquid contents of the stomach backing up into the esophagus happens in most normal individuals, so we should be quite familiar with the symptoms. In fact, one study showed that the reflux is occurring just as frequently in non-GERD patients as it does in the patients group.
However, the chronic condition (GERD) may be a serious one since the stomach liquid contains pepsin and acid which in turn may damage the lining of the esophagus/oesohagus.
The symptoms may vary from mild heartburn to a severe degree of chest pain. The chest pain radiates in some patients to the neck and upper back. Being an indication of a possible cardiac condition, it is being recommended you seek a doctor immediately if you experience this type of pain.
Speaking of doctors … you should – if in any doubt what so ever – seek medical advice before using any health related items of course!
How does this wedged reflux pillow help?
When a person is laying flat in a bed, the stomach contents may easily flow to the esophagus. For a GERD patient this probably means having problems sleeping – being awakened during the night with discomfort and pain.
What this slanted pillow does is raising the upper body (neck and shoulder) slightly. By doing so the stomach acid and pepsin does not flow past what is called the lower esophageal sphincter and into the gullet quite as easily, simply by the force of gravity.
This "positional therapy" as it is sometimes referred to, has proved to be highly beneficial by many GERD patients and doctors alike. However, you should invest in a well designed pillow to avoid further pain and problems in the lower back.
Slanted pillow construction
These pillows come in a variety of materials and shapes. It is said that the absolute best ones are the inflatable ones, simply because they adjust to your body more easily. Another benefit with some of these types is that they are much more portable. Still, the commonly used ones are wedges/pillows made of foam or soft plastic.
