Why Use An Acid Reflux Pillow?
There are many ways how to treat acid reflux naturally. One of them is by using an acid reflux pillow.
Acid reflux has a few names – gastro esophageal reflux disease, GERD, and sometimes, heartburn. But either way, it is a disease that affects adults and even children and infants. It happens to anyone regardless of age and gender. But, the most prone to this disease are pregnant women, obese people and smokers. Why? Pregnant women and obese people carry too much pressure around the abdomen, weakening the lower esophagus muscle. On the other hand, nicotine makes the les relax too much.
Acid reflux has its own common signs and symptoms which include coughing, voice transformation, hoarseness, constant ear ache, or sinusitis. If left untreated, acid reflux disease can lead to esophageal ulcer, and later, esophageal cancer.
That is why it is recommended for anyone who experiences heartburn three times a week, to have himself diagnosed to make sure that he has acid reflux or not.
If you indeed have acid reflux, one of the many things you can do is to take some preventive measures to avoid acid reflux attacks. One of them is by using an acid reflux pillow.
Acid reflux happens even at night. Since you are in an inclined position, the stomach contents, which are supposed to stay in the stomach, slide upwards and reach the esophagus, leading to a nighttime acid reflux attack. To prevent this from happening, an acid reflux pillow is recommended. It works by elevating the head and the torso by six to eight inches when you are sleeping. Many people have reported great results after using acid reflux pillows when sleeping.
Aside from using an acid reflux pillow, you are advised to do other things to make sure you prevent acid reflux attacks during the day. That includes eating only the safe foods for acid reflux, like: carbohydrate-rich food, low fat meat, dairy products, baked goods, desserts and fish, vegetables, fruits like bananas and apples and baked potatoes.
Aside from dietary changes, you should also undergo other good practical modifications, like:
1. Staying away from smoking.
2. Wearing loose clothes.
3. Sitting in upright position all day.
4. Eating in small amounts and chewing the food well.
5. Waiting for two hours after eating to sleep.
To sum it up, an acid reflux pillow can definitely help prevent nighttime acid reflux attacks. On the other hand, you should observe other healthy habits that can help prevent acid reflux episodes during the day.
